The parents of a 19-year-old college student filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman in a California state court, alleging ChatGPT advised their son to take Xanax to relieve nausea caused by kratom, an herbal opioid-like substance he was also using. The combination of kratom, Xanax, and alcohol caused fatal central nervous system depression. The suit, filed in San Francisco, seeks damages and asks the court to treat ChatGPT as a defective product; OpenAI said the exchanges occurred on an earlier model version no longer in use.
