SafeRent Solutions, whose AI-powered tenant-screening scores were used by landlords to accept or deny rental applicants, won final approval on a $2.3 million class-action settlement in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. The suit alleged the scoring algorithm disproportionately assigned low scores to Black and Hispanic applicants and to those using housing vouchers, leading landlords to deny their applications. As part of the settlement, SafeRent agreed to stop issuing an overall score or accept/decline recommendation for applicants using housing vouchers for five years.
