A woman in the Philippines believed she was in an online relationship with a member of Dubai’s royal family after weeks of messages and real-time video calls that were actually AI deepfake impersonations. She was persuaded to send roughly 100,000 Philippine pesos (about $1,600) — her entire year’s savings — supposedly to cover fees for official documents including a marriage certificate. She grew suspicious only when asked for further payment and traced the associated account to Nigeria.
