Fraudsters sent a fake WhatsApp message impersonating Intesa Sanpaolo’s CEO to the chairman of its private-banking subsidiary Fideuram, requesting help with an urgent overseas transaction, then followed up with a phone call using an AI-cloned voice of a senior law-firm partner to confirm the request. The chairman authorized transfers totaling roughly €95 million (about $108 million, converted from the original currency) to accounts in China and Hong Kong; about €53 million was later recovered through international cooperation, leaving roughly €36 million unrecovered. Milan prosecutors have placed a foreign national under investigation for computer fraud.
