The New York Police Department arrested Brooklyn resident Trevis Williams on April 21 after facial-recognition software flagged his photo as a possible match for a public-lewdness suspect caught on grainy CCTV footage two months earlier, despite the actual suspect being roughly eight inches shorter and 70 pounds lighter. Detectives included Williams’ photo in a six-person lineup of Black men with facial hair and dreadlocks, and the victim identified him despite phone location data placing Williams 12 miles from the scene at the time of the crime. Williams spent more than two days in custody before the charges were dismissed in July, with the case closed without further resolution.
