Japanese police arrested two Taiwan-born suspects who acted as in-person cash collectors for a fraud ring that used AI-generated deepfake videos of well-known public figures to endorse a fraudulent investment scheme. The scheme convinced a woman in her 80s to hand over 17 million yen (roughly $117,000) in cash during 2025. The collectors operated on detailed instructions received via social media, including directives to erase recording devices after each pickup.
